03.11.08 Little Boy: The Arts of Japan's Exploding Subculture
I have had my eye on this book for a while, saw it in waterstone, I think it was around £30, but on amazon marketplace people are asking over £100, the book is about the history of art in Japan, with an emphasis on otaku culture and the influence of atomic annihilation on the culture via kaiju (monster) films and Evangelion, the image above is a sculpture of styrofoam, clay, willow branches and paint by Noboru Tsubaki more images can be seen here although the writeup by Julie Rauer is both overly dramatic and lacking insight into otaku culture and manifests itself as more of a list of discriptive terms than a review of the book. I was particularly impressed by the work of Hidaeki Kawashima, view his ethereal images here
